Travel Scams: Protect Yourself While
On Holiday
Just when you think you've taken a vacation to get away from it all, scam artists are hard at work trying to steal your money, possessions, and even your identity.
There are travel scams of all sorts throughout the world, and it is important to be aware of those currently affecting travellers from the UK. Since travel scams are the second most reported fraud after online auctions, it is very important that you take a few extra precautions so that you don't become a victim.
Here are some of the most common travel scams that hurt consumers and what you should do to protect yourself.
Travel Scam #1 - £109 for an All-Inclusive Trip to Spain or Southern France
This sounds too good to be true right? Well of course it is. What happens when you call to book the trip? Nothing will be available on the dates you want at the magic price point, but for another £300 pounds you can get the hotel you want at the date you want.
Similar scams often offer extremely low prices which are then increased, excessively, with hidden fees.
Travel Scam #2 - Free Vacation to the South of France or Spain
A free vacation is a lot better than a £109 vacation, right? Well be sceptical again. Behind these "free" vacations are tough, high pressure sales presentations for timeshare properties. The worst part about timeshares is they are virtually impossible to get rid of once you buy one and as a result.
Travel Scam #3 - Identity Theft
Identity theft doesn't take a holiday. Unfortunately, hotel rooms seem to be the focus of many complaints. Take care not to leave personal information such as your passport, receipts, and credit cards where others have access to them. Use the hotel room's safe or, if one is not provided, keep these items with you or hotel security. Also, take precautions with your person al computer. Make sure you have plenty of passwords in your computer in the event of an unauthorized entry.
Tips to Protect Yourself with While on Holiday
- Remember the classic phrase: if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.
- Never loose sight of your credit card, not even for a minute. If at all possible, ask your waiter at a restaurant to bring you the credit card machine.
- Be aware of travel companies that provide misinformation about travel costs.
- Make sure your travel company is a registered and respected outfit that has been established in the business community.
By taking the necessary steps towards protecting yourself while on vacation, you can ensure that you and your family will be protected from scam artists, and that you will have a perfect holiday.
