Staying Safe Overseas
Thomas Cook provides unbeatable deals on all of the best holiday offers - and they want you to remain safe and enjoy your trip. Here are some tips for staying safe overseas.
Concerns Many People Have
When I am overseas I will be unfamiliar with the conditions and risks.
The best way to deal with this concern is to educate yourself. Purchase a travel guide or look online for free information. Consider the weather, potential medical threats, and any issues of political unrest.
A great resource for travellers is www.fco.gov.uk/travel (also available by calling 0845 850 2829). This site provides up-to-date information on all countries and their respective threats.
You can reduce the risks that you may face by taking some simple precautions. For example, every traveller should ensure that their vaccinations are up to date and that they have a full supply of all necessary prescriptions.
I worry that there is more crime overseas.
Tourists are wise to be cautious and do their best to prevent becoming a victim of crime overseas. Visit www.fco.gov.uk/travel for up-to-date information about your destination and prepare yourself accordingly.
Some common precautions that every tourist should take include carrying your money in a discreet place such as a money belt, securing valuables in a safe, and not venturing too far beyond the tourist areas.
I am concerned that should something happen I won't be able to find help, or that help will be very expensive.
This is an important concern for travellers, but there are ways to protect yourself. First, be sure that you research your destination, before leaving, and understand the basic criminal and medical systems.
Second, always make sure that you have full travel insurance for every holiday. This will protect you from high foreign costs. If you are travelling within the European Economic Area or Switzerland you should also apply for a free European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) at www.ehic.org.uk or www.dh.gov.uk/travellers, or through 0845 606 2030. These cards do not replace Travel Insurance, but do supplement it.
Final Tips for a Great Trip
- Purchase a comprehensive and up-to-date guidebook.
- Learn a few key phrases in the native language.
- Respect the culture's standards for dress.
- Don't take chances with drugs and alcohol; consider laws and the dangers of becoming intoxicated.
